Chapter 15  How can people influence change?

A coyote has been captured in a killing neck snare on a trapline in Alberta. Its death will be long and painful, but nobody will know about it. If questioned about this capture, the trapper will respond that the use of killing snares in Canada is condoned by government agencies and that this animal died humanely.

End of story...or is it?

This wolf was poisoned by strychnine. Government officials killed it to allegedly protect woodland caribou. When questioned about this kill, the biologist in charge will tell you that this was a quick and selective kill - end of story. But is it?”

I really enjoyed the book. It was an easy read for the layperson and explained so many things that I wasn’t previously aware of. The descriptions and pictures added to my understanding of the situation and I feel I am now better informed about the cruelty that is presently taking place.

This book was a true eye opener for me. It is a must read for people who really want to stop animal cruelty and need to know the facts. I now know and understand the injustices that are taking place and I am ready to defend the author’s stance against animal cruelty. I don’t know if there is anything I can suggest to improve this book but I do feel that, without the figures and pictures, it would not have been as powerful. I would recommend this book as a first step to better understand what is actually happening to these animals. People need to know the truth and this book provides exactly that.

My name is Jessica Malyk and I am from a farming family based out of Stony Plain. Dr. Gilbert Proulx does an excellent job at conveying the realities of animal welfare in the topics discussed all while avoiding the bias of an idealist mindset. He takes scientific facts and extensive research to a comprehensive level so that the message of animal cruelty is communicated effectively with proper solutions to major issues in the world of brutality to animals. The ability for a trapper economy to flourish and a humane respect for animals to remain is in existence; the level of effort to cooperate with surroundings becomes the difference. People can respect a healthy balance of the environment while still creating a lifestyle that can be profitable.

There is an existing problem, supported by evidence that is not only theoretical but physical. There is technical exploration of why the problem exists, and there are multiple solid options in directions to improve the issue, with a vast amount of perspectives appreciated and understood. Therefore, I do not believe that one may argue that the book is biased, idealistic, or ignorant of certain groups. Literally every facet of the topics was explored. I would, and already have, to groups that have used methods such as the ones stated in the book in the past, to understand the perspective and the ability to coexist while still making a lifestyle for oneself.

...Excellent job at conveying the realities of animal welfare...

Intolerable Cruelty was a great read that shined a light on an important yet under-examined topic. The book was wholly informative, while creating cause for additional reflection.

Arguments and concerns raised in the book reinforce the stance of those seeking to help animals and defend wolves, while also raising important issues for those who may not yet understand the gravity of the issue at hand. A clear trend is laid out, with those practicing trapping operating under a gross misunderstanding of proper management techniques, while government compliance has continued to negatively impact the welfare of these beautiful creatures.

While there are many who claim that humane steps are being taken to control the predator population, it is clear that cruelty is, in fact, being implemented in order to cull an innocent animal who simply carries negative stigmas.
